The $8,000 AI discount most businesses don't know about
A $200 a month Claude plan can deliver about $8,000 of AI a month, and most people never use enough of it to notice. Here's how the discount works and why it won't last.
Imagine I sold you a $2,000 Amazon gift card for $50. The only catch is that it expires Sunday night. Then on Monday you get a new one, same price, same deal, every week.
Would you spend all $2,000 every week, or just some of it?
That's the deal Claude and ChatGPT are offering right now, but most people are only using a fraction of their subscription.
Let me explain. In June 2026, SemiAnalysis, a research firm that tracks the AI industry, found that a $200 a month Claude plan (Claude Max) can get you about $8,000 worth of AI a month. That's 40 times what you pay.
Most people have no idea. In fact, fewer than 5% of subscribers actually take advantage of this massive subsidy. To see why a deal like this exists, it helps to know how AI is actually sold.
How AI is actually sold
When you sign up for ChatGPT or Claude, you pay a flat monthly price, somewhere between $20 and $200. That's how most people buy AI, so it's easy to assume that's what AI costs.
Behind the scenes, the AI companies price it a different way. They sell it by the token, which is a small piece of a word. OpenAI's rule of thumb is that 100 tokens is about 75 words. Businesses that build AI into their own software pay by the token. So do developers, and so do big companies on Anthropic's Enterprise plan. Anthropic charges them $4 for every million tokens they send Claude Opus and $20 for every million tokens the AI writes back.
A million tokens sounds like a lot, but AI goes through them fast once it's doing real work. To finish a single task, it reads your files, your emails and its own earlier work over and over. (For reference, one night of work on my own system usually burns about 15 million tokens.)
Your subscription bundles all of that into one flat price. So researchers can do some simple math. They max out a plan, count the tokens, and price them the way everyone else pays. That's where the $8,000 comes from.
The discount only goes to people who use it
Here's the part most people miss. The flat price is the same whether you use your plan once a week or around the clock.
So what you get out of it depends entirely on you. Someone who barely touches their plan might pay $200 and use $20 worth of AI. A heavy user pays the same $200 a month and can get more than $8,000 worth of AI every month. Anthropic has even said one user ran up "tens of thousands" on a single $200 a month plan.

Each block is $200 of AI, priced by the token the way businesses and developers pay.

In tokens, $8,000 of AI at Anthropic's Opus prices is somewhere between 400 million and 2 billion tokens a month, depending on how much the AI reads versus writes. That's our math, not Anthropic's.
Almost nobody is a heavy user. When Anthropic added weekly limits to its plans in July 2025, it said fewer than 5% of subscribers used enough to ever hit them.

The other 95 are leaving money on the table.
Why would anyone sell AI this cheap?
Because right now, someone else is footing the bill. Big Tech is on track to spend around $750 billion on AI data centers this year, and OpenAI alone burned $3.7 billion in the first three months of 2026. The AI companies are fighting for customers, and SemiAnalysis says the cheap plans still make sense for them as a way to win those customers.
They know what they're giving away. By SemiAnalysis's estimate, subscriptions bring in about 10% of Anthropic's revenue while using more than 40% of its computing power. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, said it plainly about ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI's own $200 plan: "we are currently losing money on openai pro subscriptions! people use it much more than we expected."
If you remember $6 Uber rides across town, back when investors were covering half your fare, you've seen this before.
It won't last
Cheap Ubers didn't last, and this won't either. Harvard Business Review put it this way in August 2026: "organizations are effectively being paid to adopt AI... but that era is ending."
You can already see it. In April 2026, Anthropic's head of growth said "our current plans weren't built for this." In August, Anthropic announced a 17% cut to its weekly limits for coding. In September, OpenAI stopped selling its $200 plan for a few weeks, then brought it back with a smaller allowance.
The prices on the website haven't changed. The gift cards are just getting smaller.
Most businesses don't even know it's there
Business owners are buying AI. Ramp found that more than half of US businesses on its platform paid for AI in September. Very few are getting much out of it.
You can see the gap in people's time. Workers who are fluent with AI say it saves them about eight hours a week. People who use it now and then save about three.
So most businesses are paying for the gift card, spending a few dollars of it, and letting the rest expire every week.
Spend the card while it's this big
The fix is simple to say: use what you're paying for. Hand AI real work, the big jobs and the boring ones, and let it run. Using as much of your plan as you can, every week, has a name: token maxing. I'll show you exactly how I do it in my next post.
Right now, $20 to $200 a month gets you thousands of dollars of AI working for your business. Most of your competitors don't know that yet. It won't stay this cheap forever.
